Jesus said in Matthew 16:18b: “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” That is NOT the church I am critiquing in THIS post. Instead, I am critiquing American churchianity, the spectator sport of not participating in disciple-making (Matt. 28:18-20) by speaking the truth in love to others (Eph. 4:15-16) to build the real church: the body of Christ!
I went to James MacDonald’s blog and watched this video where he says that his church (Harvest) does NOT sing “Jesus is my boyfriend” songs.
In other words, songs that say things like “Hold my hand, run with me” and other such phrases that appeal to a boy-girl relationship with Jesus that frankly seems to demean His Lordship over us. Pastor James makes a lot of good points in this blog:
I must tell you that I have a deep concern about American Christianity appealing to us as though Jesus is our boyfriend, buddy, or friend while denying the Lordship and Kingship of Almighty Jesus. That’s my concern here. We need to acknowledge He is our friend but also submit to His Lordship.
I think Pastor James makes some very valid points in this blog entry.
