As is my custom, I like to address current events. One of the recent events is the September 30th arrest of Michael Phelps who received a DUI (driving under the influence) in addition to his speeding ticket. An ESPN article today revealed more facts about the situation:

Friends have said he will never do this again referring to driving under the influence yet this is his second violation already. The lesson here is that unless genuine heart change occurs, Mr. Phelps will likely do the same thing again. I don’t mean to be judgmental but that’s the reality all of us face, not just him! We all need the Holy Spirit to change our hearts (Heb. 4:12; Eph. 4:23; Rom. 10:9).

My prayer is that Mr. Phelps learns from this situation, is convicted to the core of his soul about his poor decision to drive while intoxicated endangering the lives of himself and others, sees this situation as sinful, and then repents by turning away from sin to Christ for eternal benefits as well as temporal ones. Then, and only then, will we see lasting change that will glorify God. Anything less than that may end up with the same results: a third DUI though I hope not.
