As believers in Christ, we are called out of DARKNESS into His marvelous light as I Peter 2:9 states:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

I love that verse and know it can be applied to biblical counseling in teams of two. We point people to the light of His Word so that Jesus will lead them and not the ideas of this world. Psalm 119:105 says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Counselees NEED the light of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit to lead the way and too often the flesh and the lies of this world conform them to think like this world – similar to dough being shaped into a cookie cutter and conformed into that image.

Romans 12:2 warns us: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

If we are not intentional and purposeful in our walk with God, then we will passively be conformed to think like the world thinks (which is to hate God) as we will adopt incorrect ideas about God. Romans 12:2 was addressing Christians and warning us about the importance of mind renewal that only comes from reading and obeying the Word!

God wants us to read and obey His Word so that we KNOW Him intimately, trust Him dearly, and rely upon Him only. Then and only then, will we be walking with Him in the light.

Christians are called out of the darkness but unless they begin to learn, study, read, meditate, and obey the Word, they will remain in a dimly lit world. God wants more for His children and He wants it for His own glory!

Biblical counseling is a personal ministry designed to help counselees walk in the light as they apply biblical principles to their lives in a hopeful and practical manner. It’s not a sermon but an applied sermon to the heart in a personal way that yields accountability producing real transformation.
