How do you defeat evil?
Not with more evil – with good – by speaking the truth in love (Eph. 4:15).
When someone is wrongly accusing us or treating us wrongly, Romans 12:21a commands us: “Do NOT be overcome by evil…” This is not an option. We are not to lay on the ground, flapping like a fish out of water, waving a white flag.
No, we are NOT to be overcome by their wrong toward us! Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our enemy is NOT people or flesh and blood. Our enemy is spiritual and the battle is spiritual (Eph. 6:12).
Therefore, if anyone speaks to us in a hurtful manner and intends it for evil, then God says “do not allow those words to render you useless and overcome you.” We are to respond with good regardless of their intent and sometimes we misinterpret their desire for good thinking they meant what they said in evil.
Romans 12:21b continues: “…overcome evil with good.” There’s NEVER a reason to sin back to someone NO MATTER what evil they’ve done to you.
Why? Because Jesus never responded with evil to the evil that attacked Him quite frequently and often by religious people. We are to be like Him and not sin.
