Did you know that it is estimated that there are almost 200,000 orphans in the Dominican Republic? That’s the entire size of some U.S. cities.
Thankfully, we know a church in the D.R. who is doing something about it: Iglesia Bautista de la Gracia. And we are eager to partner with them in just a few days from now!
This Baptist church has rented four homes to house children from babies drinking bottles to late teenagers. They can serve approximately 60 children now. Because the church sees the need in its community, it has now begun construction on a new facility that could potentially house 400 orphans in days ahead.
I am grateful to be going to the D.R. with 9 others next week to help in the strategic planning of that new ministry, training of the staff, and work with the orphans (probably my favorite part!). Pray for our team to have God’s wisdom, discernment, and compassion for everyone involved in this ministry. We want to serve with excellence. Two on our team are proficient in Spanish. Seven more on our team have taken years of Spanish so we believe we have a solid team traveling down to work.
Truth in Love Ministries was able to sponsor one of the members of our team to go because of the person’s valuable expertise, ability to speak Spanish, and heart for serving young persons. The cost to our small ministry was $1400.00 and is worth every penny knowing what God has entrusted to us: the message of the Gospel and hope for the hurting. We believe biblical counseling offers real hope and help to sufferers.
James 1:27 reminds us of the simplicity of practicing our faith:
Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Helping those who are without the protection of a father and showing them the love of Christ is something we can all do and should not take the responsibility given to us by God lightly.
